The Society is seeking applicants for the position of Executive Director

Executive Director Job Expectations and Qualifications

The Executive Director (ED) will report to the Board of Directors and will have responsibility for overall strategic and operational functioning of the Society. The Executive Director shall be selected by the Board of Directors and will serve on an at-will basis.

The ED will champion the Society values and purpose. The person will have leadership experience and general understanding of Board operations, bylaws, organizational operating procedures, and how to maintain the integrity of processes necessary for growth and sustainability of the organization.

This position will require approximately 10 hours / week with the understanding there will be some variability. The ED will collaborate with the Executive Committee to determine a schedule. The position will be assessed on an annual basis and continuation is contingent upon performance and funding.

This position is a remote position, though there will be some travel required for in-person annual and partner meetings.

An annual stipend of $10,000 will be provided. There are designated funds in the annual budget for office and travel expenses.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Commit to 3-year appointment, contingent upon annual evaluation and available funding
  • Possess experience with not-for-profit organizations, boards, and management
  • Possess experience with grant-writing and fundraising
  • Excel in experience with building and maintaining partnerships
  • Values and understands Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child as a driving framework for national, state, and local efforts
  • Values state and federal services and the importance of system level efforts
  • Multi-task in fast-paced environment with many projects and committees
  • Bring many perspectives together and identify collective solutions
  • Able to utilize technology to accomplish the work of the Society

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Society membership of 5+ years within the past 10 years
  • State Education Agency representative or experience working with State Education Agencies

Key overall responsibilities include:

  • Provide a continuity of experience and leadership
  • Manage daily/weekly operations
  • Maintain official records
  • Maintain historical materials and operational documents
  • Provide oversight for all financial operations, in collaboration with the Treasurer
  • Respond to Board of Director and member requests in a timely manner
  • Serve as a clearinghouse of information and communication to the Board of Directors and for the membership
  • Serve as a liaison with other relevant national and state organizations
  • Represent the organization on behalf of and at the direction of the President and the Board of Directors

Additional responsibilities, though not an exhaustive list, include:

  • Ensure annual reporting to the Virginia State Corporation Commission, Internal Revenue Services, and, as needed to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services
  • Seek legal and financial counsel to ensure annual reporting procedures are completed appropriately
  • Ensure the board is protected through relevant board and officers’ insurance annually
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as designated in the operating code and such other duties as may be delegated by the President and/or the Board of Directors

The ED will need to anticipate and support the needs of the President, Executive Committee, Board of Directors, Liaisons, and the membership.
