The professional development committee for the Society of State Leaders for Health and Physical Education is excited to announce our next virtual professional development event. This is a series of 5 Zoom events on supporting students in special populations. We are kicking off the event on August 20. The event is free for Society members. Nonmembers can pay $25 per session or $100 for all five. If you are not yet a Society member and would like to attend one or more of these sessions, please contact Pat Stewart at chmpats@gmail.com

Title: Increasing Students’ Focus with Physical Activity
Description: Physical activity can serve as an effective strategy to improve students’ focus, attention, and mood while decreasing off-task behaviors. Teachers are invited to learn research-based instructional practices that can be used as Tier 1, 2, or 3 interventions in the classroom.
Outcomes:
- Identify the purpose, benefits, and strategies of incorporating physical activity into the classroom in a variety of ways.
- Locate resources to assist in implementing physical activity into the classroom in a variety of ways.
- Practice integrating physical activity into academic interventions with MTSS.
Speaker credentials: Shana Classen is the Project Manager of Physical Education and Health at the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE). She has been with the agency for five years and was a teacher for 19 years. Prior to joining the OSDE, Shana was a physical education and health teacher in Edmond Public Schools for 17 years. She received the Health Educator of the Year award from Oklahoma Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance in 2016 and the Southern District Health Education Teacher of the Year award in 2017 by demonstrating innovative teaching in the field of health education. She has a Masters in School Counseling and is currently pursuing an Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Shana has a passion for physical education and health, because active and healthy students make better learners. John F. Kennedy’s quote says it best, “Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong.
